I’m getting ready for a surfing trip to Costa Rica at the end of the month so I took a swim lesson at the Trinity Center
just so that I could build more confidence being in the water. You would think the number of times that I’ve been in the ocean already that I would be a pro but I’m actually a little bit of a wuss.

I’m the type of person who likes to search out people who can help me improve. If you’re looking for swim lessons, my instructor Theo, is awesome. He can help you with your technique and swim stroke especially if you want to do laps. Since I will be out in open water, he’s adapted my lessons so that I can best be comfortable in water where there are more waves. He taught me the “Chicken Dance Rocket” aka the jellyfish. I’m really not that coordinated so I definitely need to practice that a little more.
I also practice at the Rumsey Aquatic Center
in Eastern Market. If you’re a DC resident, you swim for free (show your DC driver’s license, sign in and start swimming!). There’s also the Wilson Aquatic Center
in NW. Since I spend a lot of time running, the time I spend in the pool is to really exercise my arms. I use the Styrofoam weights to help me with my arm stride. The faster you move your arms, the faster your legs move. So when I’m out of the pool, I can feel the difference after I’ve done a weight workout when I go running. My arms actually do move faster!
